Internet Use Rules

The Burbank Public Library is pleased to offer the public free access to a variety of information resources, including those available through the Internet. The Library makes this service available as part of an overall effort to serve the community’s informational, educational, and recreational needs.

  1. Computer users must have a valid Burbank Public Library card. To obtain a card, fill out an application and present it along with the required identification to the Circulation Desk.
  2.  To use the Internet, you must read and sign a copy of the Internet Use Policy. Copies of the policy are located at Circulation and at the Adult and Children’s Reference Desks. Return the signed form to the circulation desk to authorize your account. At that time, an “internet sticker” will be placed on your card identifying you as an Internet user.
  3. Internet users under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian’s signature on the Internet Use Policy’s Signature and Authorization form.
  4. Every person using the Internet must use their own card with Internet authorization. Using someone else’s card is a form of identity theft and may be grounds for revoking Internet privileges.
  5. Children are encouraged to use the terminals in the Children’s Room. Use of the Children’s Room computers is reserved for children who are in the 8th grade or younger. Children 9 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult or guardian at all times in order to use the internet computers.
  6. Computer reservations are for same day use only, and must be made in person.
  7. There are two ways to use the computers. Walk up to a computer that says “Available” on the screen and log on with your Burbank Library card number. Or, make an advance reservation at a PC reservation station by entering your Burbank Library card number.
  8. Computer users may reserve up to two 55 minute sessions per day. The reservations cannot be made in consecutive order. One session must be used before another session can be reserved.
  9. Computer users may also have additional 15-minute express sessions when there are available computers. 15 minute express computers and sessions are intended for short-time use such as checking email, and printing forms or documents. Persons requiring longer sessions are requested to make reservations on the one-hour computers.
  10. A reservation will be held for 5 minutes beyond the assigned time. It is the user’s responsibility to arrive at an assigned workstation on time.
  11. A maximum of two people may use one workstation provided they do not disturb others. Both people must have valid Burbank Library cards with internet authorization.
  12. Appropriate behavior, addressed in the Library Rules, is required at all times.
  13. There is a charge for printing of $.10 per page for black and white, and $.50 per page for color.
  14. Downloading to a floppy disk or flash drive is permitted. We do not allow the uploading of CD-ROM programs. The Library assumes no responsibility for any data, which may be downloaded, or the reliability of such data.
  15. The Library assumes no liability for data lost if there is a malfunction of the computer or any of the computer’s disk/flash drives.
  16. The Library cannot guarantee privacy when using the computers. You must delete any documents saved to the computer or they may be viewed by subsequent users. You must return to the desktop after each session in order to protect your privacy.
  17.  All computers automatically close out at the end of each session. Watch for the pop up warnings on the computer screens.
  18. The Adult and Children’s staff is available for general help; however, they cannot provide individual instruction on the use of the computers or software.
  19. Use the workstations with care. Please do not attempt to fix problems. Instead, immediately report them to the librarian at the Reference Desk. Abuse or misuse of Library equipment such as modifying or tampering with computer hardware or software is a violation of California Penal Code, Section 502, et. Seq.
  20.  Violation of any section of this policy may result in the suspension (7 days or 30 days) and/or revoking of internet privileges. The Library reserves the right to revise these procedures from time to time.
